Chapter 10

Ethan Williams was in her house.

Fee bit her lip as she watched him walk through the living room, feeling as fluttery and overwrought as a teenager on her first date.

This was Ethan Williams. He was right next to the couch where she’d fantasized about him a few days ago. Only, he was also Ethan now, a man she respected and admired. A man she cared for.

A man she was hiding a secret from.

Yesterday she’d hidden everything with his name or face on it in a cupboard, shoving in books and magazines and DVDs willy-nilly, slamming the door shut before it could all come tumbling out. And she’d erased every single podcast from her phone, double-checking that they really were gone.

Only, it was like having uranium or plutonium sitting in that cabinet, something hidden but still incredibly radioactive, and the Geiger counter of her conscience wouldn’t stop pinging.

Ethan looked around the living room, never saying a word. When he finally turned to her, tucking his hands into his back pockets, he still didn’t speak. He only looked.

His expression said it all though, igniting the air between them with heavy need and aching lust.

“So,” he said finally. It was an invitation, an opening, and a dare all in one.

“So,” she said. Her pulse was rocketing through her, making her tremble inwardly even as she held herself oh so quiet.

“You didn’t invite me here to look over your décor, did you?”

“You even have to ask?” They both knew their destination here.

“Then why am I over here”—he pointed to the ground beneath his feet—“and you’re all the way over there?”

She cocked her head. “You can come and get me.” She made that an invitation and an opening and a dare herself.

His walk really was a thing of beauty, slow and rolling, with enough pride to be a swagger but not enough to be arrogant. Just as he’d done with the horse today, he was going to put on a show for her. And she was going to be his more-than-willing assistant.

He didn’t kiss her, not at first, even though she tipped her face up to his in clear invitation. Instead, he slipped one arm around her waist and cupped her cheek with the other hand. He simply stared into her eyes for long moments, his thumb making slow circles on her cheekbone.

It was soft and raw all at once, so terribly intimate that her first impulse was to retreat. If he saw too much, if he knew what she was hiding, he’d be the one to pull away. She was terrified of that.

But she was more terrified of being alone in this moment, which she would be if she broke their eye contact. So she held on to his gaze and fell so deep into it even breathing was an effort.

“Ofelia,” he said softly. He said it like she was a treasure he’d been searching for and he could hardly believe he’d actually found it.

“I’m here,” she said. “I’m here. With you.” Because she could hardly believe it either, that he had somehow found his way to her.
